This map shows our approximate route - Google does not have the rail route programmed in yet, so this shows nearby roads. This trip was 1700km and I think that most people (previously I was included in this group) don't realize that Australia is almost the size of the continental U.S.

While planning this trip, I realized that it would be quicker to fly, the other option was driving - which would have taken a good 20-hours of steering from the right side of the car. Each option would have cost about the same. It seems like we got a good taste for the counrtyside and a better sense of the local culture; although it was hard to be primarily seated for this long.

Here are our positions for the next 24-hours or so. The train did stop often. When it did, we would jump out and walk up and down the station's platform to get a little exercise.

There is a lot of sugar cane grown between Cairns and Mackay.

We think this is probably a plant for processing sugar cane.

As we rode further south, the scenery changed and we saw more grazing. We saw a few kangaroos in the fields but were not quick enough to photograph them.

Here we see grass, sparse trees and lots of termite mounds.
